From Cluttered to Calm: My Journey to an Organized Home

Updated: Oct 28

Growing Up Messy

I haven't always been an organized person. In fact, far from it! Growing up, I was quite messy and struggled to keep my room tidy. I didn't know how to handle clutter properly, and in my desperation I shoved things in drawers or boxes. When I tried to find a specific item, I felt frustrated because nothing had a home. Would I find it in a random box, a messy drawer, or under the bed? It often felt easier to just buy another one.

Decluttering attempts were rare, and when I tried, it felt stressful as I didn’t know what to keep or let go of. My closet was overflowing, yet I felt like I had nothing to wear. Sound familiar?

Learning Through Life Transitions

In my early twenties I moved overseas for a year and was faced with downsizing my belongings. Packing only two suitcases forced me to be selective. My new closet had a bit more breathing room and I added a few new pieces, but putting together outfits was still a source of stress.

When I returned, I discovered that a box of sentimental items I’d left with a family member had been thrown away during a move. I was devastated. It wasn’t everything, but I also didn’t get to choose what stayed or went. The hard lesson? Avoid postponing decluttering by storing things with someone else. It’s not their responsibility to store them, and you may lose those items altogether. That experience made me reflect on what I truly wanted to keep in my life.

Discovering My Style and Systems

Over the last ten years, I’ve relocated across the country, moved multiple times, and gone through a separation. I’m not a minimalist by any means, but those transitions taught me how to declutter and organize effectively. With time and trial and error, I also discovered my personal sense of style. The result? My wardrobe is now the smallest it’s ever been, and I have plenty to wear!

Today, I feel confident about what to keep and what to say goodbye to. Of all the things I’ve let go of, my only regret is losing that box I never had the chance to choose from. That’s why my promise to you is this: you will always be in control of your decluttering decisions. I’ll guide you through the process and gently coach you if I see you struggling, but I’ll never force you to get rid of anything. If you’re unsure, we’ll create a “maybe” box to revisit later. My goal is that by the end of our time together, you’ll have the confidence to sort through that box once and for all.

Progress, Not Perfection

I’ll be honest. I still slip up sometimes, and things don’t always get put back right away. But with solid strategies, simple routines, and organizing systems in place, I now know exactly where things go, and more importantly where to find them. I love sharing tools for staying organized amidst the chaos of life. My home feels peaceful now, and I’d love to support you in creating the same.
